Page Designer (sister company to Page Hosting) warns web attacks are escalating Malicious hackers, computer vandals and virus writers are besieging British businesses warns Graham Allen, Managing Director of The Page Designer - a Hampshire based IT specialist, and businesses need to take drastic steps to protect themselves from this.
His warning follows a Government survey, which found that the number of times that cyber criminals have broken through companies defences has doubled in a year with 78% of large businesses falling victim to some kind of electronic attack be it hacking, website defacement, virus infection or fraud. The survey also revealed that businesses with a website connection or an Internet gateway were almost consistently under attack. Breaches of security can be expensive and the report estimates the average cost of each serious security breach to be £30,000, with high level break ins costing as much as £500,000 to rectify.
Despite the escalating threat of attack the survey found that businesses are still not spending enough on security with 73% of those questioned spending less than 1% of their total technology budget on security measures. Many companies viewed security spending as an overhead rather than an investment and the majority were still failing to measure the effectiveness of money spent on security improvements.
Neglect of staff training was also adding to the problem with fewer organisations telling employees about responsible use of e-mail, the web and passwords, and how to spot hackers trying to ply them for information.
Graham Allen says, “ Unfortunately many companies do not take security seriously and find themselves in a fire-fighting situation where each time there is an incident they improve security so it doesn’t happen again but fail to take the long term view of setting up a strategy to encourage a security culture within their organisation.
Graham further adds,” Here at Page Designer we take security very seriously as we specialise in designing web pages, developing software, providing computer support and Internet Consultancy. Our sister company Page Hosting Limited, based at a major data centre in London, focuses heavily on web security along with high quality web hosting and server co-location. We are always happy to discuss and advise on confidentiality and security issues with any company who feels they may be susceptible to breaches.”
